• About the college

Berbera College of Fisheries and Maritime Studies is located at the port town of Berbera, Somaliland. The Institution offers unprecedented professional courses in the fields of Fisheries (Fishing technology and Marine science) and Nautical (Maritime) Sciences in Somaliland. It was established in 2005 as an initiative by the local community to train professionals who will eventually spearhead sustainable and economic exploitation of the coastal and marine resources which have been found to be highly underutilized. The college is being managed by a council of members selected by the community to oversee continuous progress in institutions general developments. Much of the financial support comes from the local communities and the Somalilanders living in the Diasporas.

Teaching Vacancies

I. Instructor - Maritime Law (Law of the Sea)
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in law (LLB) from a reputable international university with a bias in Maritime Law
b. Experience in Teaching Law in higher institutions
c. Conversant with IMO Conventions and Ratifications
d. Knowledge in computer proficiency
e. Good command of Maritime English Language
f. Available as soon as possible

II. Instructor - Biostatistics
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in biological statistics, biometrics, mathematics (statistics major), or any other relevant statistics based degree.
b. Experience in teaching statistics in a higher institution of learning
c. Knowledge in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation
d. Ability to conduct a scientific research in the fields of Fisheries and Maritime and come up with a scientific paper
e. Knowledge in computer proficiency
f. Good command of English Language is highly recommended
g. Available as soon as possible

III. Instructor - Marine Engineering
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in Marine Engineering – propeller engineering, marine refrigeration, operation maintenance and repair
b. Good knowledge in Basic Engineering Mathematics
c. Auxiliary Engine – Pumps, hydraulic systems and marine electricity
d. Ability to conduct a scientific research in the field of marine engineering and come up with a scientific paper
e. Previous knowledge in teaching a higher institution in the field of Marine engineering
f. Knowledge in computer proficiency
g. Good command of English Language
h. Available as soon as possible

IV. Instructor - Cargo Handling and Port Management
Requirements
a. A university graduate in the field of Business Management majoring in Shipping industry
b. A good knowledge in port management and operations
c. Knowledge in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation will be an added advantage
d. Knowledge in computer proficiency
e. Good command of English Language
f. Available as soon as possible

V. Instructor – Navigation and Nautical Science
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in Nautical Science, Navigation, Celestial and Terrestrial Navigation.
b. Have a an in-depth knowledge in nautical science – metrology, rule of the road, ship maneuvering and conversant with general Marine Logistic Operations
c. Knowledge and experience in operating survival craft – life craft and rescue boat
d. Good knowledge in Global Marine Distress and Safety System (GMDSS), Radio Telephony, Position determination and Ship Stability
e. Conversant with IMO Conventions and Ratifications
f. Knowledge in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation
g. Ability to conduct a scientific research in the related field and come up with a scientific paper
h. Good Knowledge of ISM/SMS Rules and its implementation on board S
i. Excellent knowledge of STCW-95
j. Should be experienced in Carrying out Operation ,Maintenance and trouble shootings of all Marine Communication and Navigational Equipment
k. Knowledge in computer proficiency
l. Good command of English Language
m. Available as soon as possible


VI. Instructor - Computer Science – Information and communication technology (ICT)

Requirements
a. A university graduate with a Bachelor of Science - Computer Science
b. Knowledge in Programming and software development and management related with maritime and shipping industry will be an added advantage
c. Knowledge in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation
d. Good command of English Language is highly recommended
e. Previous experience as an instructor in a higher learning institutions
f. Available as soon as possible

VII. Instructor - Seamanship
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in navigation or a high diploma in navigation studies
b. Knowledge and experience in operating survival craft – life craft and rescue boat
c. Conversant with IMO Conventions and Ratifications
d. Good Knowledge of ISM/SMS Rules and its implementation on board S
e. Excellent knowledge of STCW-95
f. Knowledge in computer proficiency
g. Good command of English Language
h. Available as soon as possible


VIII. Instructor - Fisheries Post Harvest Technology
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in either fisheries, foods science, food processing or any other relevant qualifications from a reputable institution
b. Conversant with International Standards in food processing, preservation, packaging and handling
c. Knowledge in HACCP rules and regulations
d. Experience in Fish processing factory in a management position will be highly regarded.
e. Knowledge in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation will be an asset
f. Ability to conduct a scientific research in the related field and come up with a scientific paper
g. Knowledge in computer proficiency
h. Good command of English Language
i. Available as soon as possible

IX. College Administrator/ Dean of Students

Requirements
a. A university graduate in the field of Management and Administration with experience in heading an institution offering higher education
b. A post graduate course in Human Resource management is highly recommended but not a must
c. Knowledge in computer proficiency with emphasis in Microsoft Office and Accounting Packages will be an asset
d. Good command of English and Somali Languages
e. A post graduate course in Education courses will be an added advantage
f. Available as soon as possible


X. Expert in Fishing Gear and Fish-Capture Techniques
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in fisheries with a bias in gear technology any other relevant qualifications from a reputable institution
b. Conversant with International Standards in gears and FAO codes of conduct in Fishing
c. Experience in gear modeling and experimental gear efficiency for economic and sustainable fishing process.
d. Knowledge in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation will be an asset
e. Ability to conduct a scientific research in the related field and come up with a scientific paper
f. Knowledge in computer proficiency
g. Good command of English Language
h. Available as soon as possible


XI. Instructor - Fisheries Stock Assessment and Population Dynamics
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in fisheries, biometrics or statistics f
b. Experience as a Lecturer in a higher learning institution for a period not less than a year
c. Conversant with computer software programs in modeling of fisheries stocks and population dynamics
d. Knowledge in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation will be an asset
e. Ability to conduct a scientific research in the related field and come up with a scientific paper
f. Knowledge in computer proficiency is a must
g. Good command of English Language
h. Available as soon as possible


XII. Instructor - Fish Systematics
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in either fisheries, marine sciences or any other relevant qualifications from a reputable institution
b. Good knowledge in marine organisms classification
c. Conversant with FAO’s fisheries statistical software and Databases and other research organizations
d. Knowledge in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation will be an asset
e. Ability to conduct a scientific research in the related field and come up with a scientific paper
f. Knowledge in computer proficiency
g. Good command of English Language
h. Available as soon as possible


XIII. Instructor - Marine Biology
Requirements
a. A university graduate with a degree in Fisheries, Zoology, Ecology or any other relevant qualifications from a reputable university institution
b. Experience in working with research organization on marine organisms will be an advantage
c. Knowledge and a proof in project management – proposal writing, project execution, monitoring and evaluation will be an asset
d. Ability to conduct a scientific research in the related field and come up with a scientific paper
e. Knowledge in computer proficiency
f. Good command of English Language

XIV. Instructor – Marine Ecology
Requirements
